  • Hold Your Subscriber’s Hand: Don’t start selling to your subscribers right away. Take them by the hand and teach them about whatever it is they subscribed to your list for. Example – if you are giving them an ebook you would make the first few emails about the ebook itself. Teach them to open and use what ever resource you provide. THEN you can start adding some sales or promotional messages.

  • Make Your Subject Lines Pop: The very first thing your subscribers will see is your subject line. So, you need to make sure your subject line pops – make sure it grabs the attention of the list members and makes them want to open your email. Use the personalization feature so the subject line address them personally. Example – “!ifname, here’s a secret about _______ we don’t share with just anybody!

  • Give, Give, Give: Every few emails, make sure you give your subscribes something of value. Something they can use or implement right away. This builds trust and shows your list members you care about them. The more trust you build the better email open rates you’ll have!

  • Give Simple & Clear Direction: You have to look at each email you write or have written, the same way you would if you were writing copy for your website. You need to give your readers clear and simple direction. You need to literally tell the reader what to do. (“What you want to do right now is simple and easy – Click the link below”)

  • 3 Links MAX In Email Copy: This is actually important and I see most people skipping this altogether most of the time. Make sure you have NO MORE than 3 links to whatever it is you’re emailing about. You should actually have 3 links in every email you want people to take action on.  One at the top of the email, one in the middle and one at the end.
  • Give Hints About The Next Message Coming:  You want to keep your subscribers thinking about the next email coming.  If you have a good follow up series, you can actually get subscribers looking for your next email when you give them a little hint about what it will cover. If they don’t see it, some will even email you asking where it is.
  • When Possible, Create Web Pages Of Your Emails:  This would be kind of like an online archive of your messages. You link a link at the very top of your message to the page online and if they click, they see a webpage with your email message. This allows you to do more, provide more info and get them clicking on other links.
  • Plain Text & HTML Format:  Most email systems today offer “multi-part” email sending. This is an HTML version and a plain text version going out at the same time. The email reader systems decide which one to show the reader.  This ensures you always show the best possible message to the reader.
